Charles Hall

Born in South Florida, Charlie first attended the University of Miami and
later San Francisco State University. At the latter school he developed the
modern day waterbed as his graduate design and engineering school project
for his Master's degree. Charlie unveiled his invention to the public in
August 1968 at an exhibit at the Cannery Gallery, near Fisherman's Wharf in
San Francisco. He applied for and later received US Patent # 3585356 for
the original waterbed. Charlie then founded Innerspace Environments, the
first waterbed company. Innerspace quickly grew to over 30 retail stores
and launched the waterbed industry. In 1975 he started Basic Designs, a
design and manufacturing company specializing in outdoor camping and marine
accessory products.

His inventions during this period include the Sun
Shower, the first portable warm-water shower, and the Equalizer mattress,
providing water bed like comfort to campers in a 3 pound package. Basic
Designs was later acquired by K2 and then the by Coleman, the outdoor
products company.

More recently Charlie co-founded Advanced Elements, the largest manufacturer
of premium inflatable kayaks and other water sports equipment.

He currently resides near the water, on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
